Local Buzz: Cult 101 March Lineup at the Gateway Film Center in Columbus, Ohio

Here's the exciting lineup for the March session of Cult 101 at the Gateway Film Center (GFC) in Columbus, Ohio. If you don't know about the Cult 101 program at GFC, then read about it straight from the horse's mouth HERE.

Phantom of the Paradise (!!!) - March 1 - 4. The exclamation points are my own because I love this movie and I'll be seeing it again on the big screen. If you haven't seen De Palma yet, you can stream it for free from Amazon Prime Video right now. Great documentary about director Brian De Palma.

Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (35mm) - March 5 - 9. The oddball classic that gave me an unhealthy fear of lady truckers for most of my childhood. Take advantage of the rare opportunity to see it in 35mm!

The Man Who Fell to Earth (4k Restoration) - March 10 - 13. David Bowie's first performance in a movie. Weird. Wonderful. Bowie.

Escape from New York - March 14 - 16. The first pairing of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter that kicked off their reign of the 80s. Snake Plissken is still an iconic character and we can still pretend there's only one movie in this franchise. Kurt's aged great too, check him out in the new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 trailer that just released.

Akira - March 20 - 23. Whenever someone asks what's a good anime movie to watch for your first exposure to the genre, does anything ever get blurted out aside from Akira? Well maybe Ghost in the Shell, but we'll have to see how the live-action version holds up. Akira is iconic and awesome.

The Wicker Man (1973) - March 24 - 26. Thankfully this is not the Nicolas Cage remake where he runs around in a bear suit and punches women. This is the one of the ultimate films with that "there's something really wrong here" vibe for when you travel.

This is Spinal Tap - March 27 - 30. Technically, This is Spinal Tap is not the first "mockumentary", however it is the film that popularized the term and is the primary reference point for most people. Funny and highly quotable, this classic is always worth a watch. Especially relevant now that the creators have sued and alleged that they have not been fairly compensated for their work. You can read about the pending lawsuit HERE.

Donnie Darko (4k Restoration) - March 30 - April 5. Donnie Darko was one of the first cult hits of the DVD era. Good box art AND word of mouth caused everybody to pick this up from the local blockbuster and give it a shot. It also left most casual viewers scratching their heads.
