Pacific Rim: Uprising

It has been ten years since The Battle of the Breach and the oceans are still, but restless. Vindicated by the victory at the Breach, the Jaeger program has evolved into the most powerful global defense force in human history. The PPDC now calls upon the best and brightest to rise up and become the next generation of heroes when the Kaiju threat returns.

Pacific Rim Uprising follows the next generation of freedom fighters this time instead of fighting against giant Kaiju from the deep they are fighting giant monsters from the overlord corporation. The highlight of the movie was the opening chase scene where a young girl is on the run from PPDC and its giant robot police force. She and Jake Pentecost (John Boyega) are thrown together and their chemistry is instant on screen.

The problem with PRU is that it goes away from this magic for the rest of the movie. Instead of keeping Jake and Amara together it switches into a formulaic film about a corporation that is out of control and really is the threat the world needs to be afraid of. The fighting between what Kaiju we do get and the jaegers has no meaning or real weight behind it because we are never given the chance to get invested in them.

On a positive note it is really good looking and the effects are solid. But a movie without a soul makes me cry that Guillermo Del Toro was not directly involved in this sequel.
