The Upside

Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston shine in this surprising and uplifting comedy.

A recently paroled ex-convict (Kevin Hart) who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a paralyzed billionaire (Bryan Cranston).

The tale may seem old and worn out. A billionaire and an everyday man are thrown together and learn something from each other even though they are complete opposites. However the chemistry between Hart and Cranston just comes off the screen at you and I found myself laughing at jokes that you could see coming a mile away.

Nicole Kidman is terrific in this understated role as administrative assistant to Cranston's character and her connection with him feels genuine.

One of the criticisms of this film will be that Hart's character is played as a stereotypical black man and I am not going to speak to that directly. For me however I found his story moving and compelling as a man who is just trying to make it through life having never really been given a fair shake.

The Upside is upfront for me as a great choice for viewing at the theatre.
